James Johnston’s Keepin’ it Country Playlist

James Johnston’s Keepin’ it Country Playlist

A longtime student of country anthems, James Johnston debuted with one of his own in the form of 2021’s gold-selling single “RAISED LIKE THAT”. Brought up on farms in New South Wales before hitting Tamworth and later Australian Idol, Johnston never lost touch with the songs that made a serious impression on him in years past. That includes party songs ideal for driving down a dirt road or drinking beers around a bonfire. He has compiled many of those on this blockbuster playlist, spanning Brooks & Dunn, Florida Georgia Line, Alan Jackson and fellow Aussies like Brad Cox, Morgan Evans and Keith Urban. Have a listen and read on for his fond memories about four tracks in particular.   Sugarland, “Stuck Like Glue” “My first trip to the US I was with my family and this was the No. 1 song on radio at the time. It will forever be the soundtrack to my summer of 2010.“   Morgan Wallen, “Whiskey Glasses” “I was in Nashville in 2019 when this song hit No. 1 in the US. Every bar and every party I went to, we had this song cranked up. I remember dreaming that one day I would write a song that everyone knew the words to.”   Lee Kernaghan, “Boys from the Bush” “Lee Kernaghan was the soundtrack to my life growing up, I lived on a farm in the bush and whenever I was in the car or in the tractor, Lee was what we played. This song just made me feel part of a club, like I belonged.”   Alan Jackson, “Summertime Blues” “I was a big fan of American country growing up, in particular Alan Jackson. As a kid I would spend hours learning his songs and, with a big hat and boots, I’d dream of being a country music star.”
