Dilla was as comfortable producing boisterous rap boasts or sleek, sensuous R&B as he was following his own musical muse. Detroit's Bizarre raps brusquely over the disorienting quarter-note synths of "Butterfly", while Steve Spacek's haunting, emotional "Dollar" is so smooth it glows. Dilla's own "B.B.E." is a tribute to Kraftwerk via Detroit techno, an instrumental salute to music history.
