Invent Animate emerged from the progressive-metalcore boom of the early 2000s with a sound that’s fierce, complex and elegant. The Texans’ first two albums, 2014’s Everchanger and 2016’s Stillworld, are their most visceral: hardcore screams and death-metal howls punching through tapestries of pointillist guitar solos and djent riffs. Singer Ben English’s departure in 2018 delayed studio plans, but the wait was worth it: released in 2020, Greyview reveals new layers of emotion thanks to vocalist Marcus Vik’s spiralling cries and the group’s evolving talent for blending ethereal textures with epic songwriting.
