Not so much a band as a movement, Herbs have borne vocal witness to the changing life and times of New Zealand since their first politically charged single of '81, French Letter. Singer-guitarist Dilworth Karaka and his shifting chorus of barrel-chested brothers in harmony defined a soulful strain of Pacific reggae over five albums, from that year's What's Be Happen to Homegrown in '90. They hit critical mass with Slice of Heaven, the gloriously upbeat single with Dave Dobbyn that saturated 1986. Tim Finn, Annie Crummer and US guitar hero Joe Walsh have also recorded star turns with the righteous Pacific Islander collective.
