Since dropping their debut album in 2012, Harakiri for the Sky have proved to be one of blackgaze’s most imposing outfits. The Austrian duo of Matthias Sollak and Michael V. Wahntraum don’t write songs so much as unleash expanses of sound that are downright oceanic in how they swell and crash. Harakiri for the Sky are significantly more brutal than many acts found in the ever-expanding post-black-metal universe—yet as an album like 2021’s Mӕre demonstrates, there are subtleties lurking in the din, including gorgeous melodic runs, classical-inspired textures and pained cries that are overwhelming in their naked vulnerability.
