Formed in 1982, Fates Warning have never stopped redrawing prog metal’s ambitious boundaries. On early albums such as 1986’s classic Awaken the Guardian, the Connecticut-formed band took speedy cues from the nimble, thrashing New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. However, the group opened up their sound considerably in the subsequent decades: vocalist Ray Alder’s helium shriek deepened into a muscular growl as Fates Warning embraced gouging grooves, while songs such as 2016’s “From the Rooftops” combined space-filled arrangements with furious, tangled riffs and rhythms.
