When he formed The Lemonheads in the late '80s, Evan Dando was trying to play punk and hardcore music. But his winsome voice and ear for a great hook won out and, in 1992, the band released It's a Shame About Ray, a collection of crystalline power-pop tunes. Grunge may not have been looking for its Paul Simon but Dando continues to occupy that role. In his solo work and as a bandleader, the singer/songwriter is a master of guileless, gently witty, guitar-driven songs.
