DJ Quik is a child of the funk. Born and raised in Compton, he came up under the tutelage of Zapp's Roger Troutman before finding inspiration in his city's hip-hop scene. 1991's Quik Is the Name outlined his G-funk agenda as he dropped confident raps over funky self-produced tracks. The project eventually went platinum—an accolade mirrored by '98's equally accomplished Rhythm-al-ism—and Quik has since settled into a zone where his talent is lauded by peers like Dr. Dre and B-Real.
