Former Napalm Death frontman Lee Dorian formed Cathedral in 1989, inspired by plodding bruisers like Black Sabbath, Pentagram and St. Vitus. The new band emphasised glorious dirge-like tempos, gnarly down-tuned guitars and steely dynamics over Napalm's pure speed—a doom metal that gave up now-classic albums like '91's Forest of Equilibrium and '01's Endtyme. Cathedral pushed boundaries throughout their career too, adding psych, prog, '70s-style hard rock and even disco to their menu of Sabbath-worshipping burners. They split in 2013 after an eye-opening 24-year run.
