An avant-gardist in a pop star's clothing, Bahia-born songwriter Caetano Veloso pioneered Brazil's anti-establishment Tropicália movement in the swinging '60s. Veloso's songs so successfully infused bossa nova with the groovier strains of American and British pop that he was exiled for his supposed subversion.
