Brian Setzer first landed in the pop consciousness as guitarist and frontman for the Stray Cats, whose throwbacks to the earliest days of the rock era combined flashes of ‘50s-style cool with the practiced hip of New Wave. Since then, the Long Island-born hepcat has specialized in building bridges between mid-20th-century pop and modern audiences. In the ‘90s, he became the standard-bearer of swing with his eponymous orchestra, whose popularity helped jump-start the alt-rock era’s fondness for jazz-tinged rave-ups; during the 21st century, he’s made noise while carrying a torch for the slicked-back, riff-heavy genre known as rockabilly.
