London’s black midi take their name from a complex style of programming; fittingly, the math rockers’ music barrels forward like a robot with a mind of its own. On early singles like “Bmbmbm”, from their 2019 debut Schlagenheim, guitar, drums and bass form a lockstep accompaniment for Geordie Greep’s shouty, sardonic vocals. That album’s lead track, “953”, goes one step further with a stop-start, groove-heavy chug punctuated by free jazz. The carnivalesque “Welcome To Hell”, from 2022’s Hellfire, introduces a hint of levity without abandoning one iota of kinetic energy.
