Bianca Belair: The Message

“I started in WWE in 2016, and one of my main things was I just wanted to stay true to who I was,” Bianca Belair tells Ebro on the latest episode of The Message. “I just wanted to be unapologetically me: be loud, be proud, be bold about that. And I wanted to draw people that look like me specifically to this sport, to WWE, and let them know that you can watch WWE and find someone that you relate to.” This wasn’t always the case for Belair herself. A preternatural athlete who went from track and field in college to CrossFit competitor to superstar wrestler, Belair grew up in the era of the “WWE Diva”, a period where seeing people who looked like her execute the acrobatic moves she’d go on to master was a particularly rare occurrence. For Belair's The Message playlist, the WWE superstar chose songs from some of Black music’s most profound lyricists, people like J. Cole, Janelle Monáe, Megan Thee Stallion, Nas, Rapsody and Beyoncé, all of whom inspire her to be the best version of herself. “I love songs that really just speak to me as a woman—as a Black woman,” Belair says. “Songs that talk about just figuring life out, being the superwoman that you are and not falling into following trends, but just staying true to who you are. And that's really what the theme of my playlist is.”
