For techno's ground zero, look to the Belleville Three: Derrick May (Rhythim Is Rhythim), Juan Atkins (Model 500), and Kevin Saunderson (Inner City), three suburban-Detroit kids who, in the '80s, fused African-American electronic funk with Euro-inspired synth-pop. By the end of the decade, protégés like Carl Craig (a.k.a. Psyche) and Underground Resistance's Suburban Knight picked up the baton.
