Beat Happening Essentials

Beat Happening formed in the college town of Olympia, Washington, took inspiration from the DIY drive of punk, and mixed in their own brand of tender, lo-fi geekiness. Led by K Records co-owner Calvin Johnson, the band's minimalist garage pop was often dark and sardonic, with even their sweetest love songs containing a slightly seamy edge. The trio split up following 1992's You Turn Me On, and each went on to projects like The Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System and D+.
