Few have reprogrammed the very essence of electronic music more thoroughly than the UK duo Autechre. Raised on hip-hop and rave, Sean Booth and Rob Brown got their start in the early '90s making breakbeat hardcore and melancholy electro, but their technological experiments were soon resulting in wild, convoluted cuts balanced precariously between crystalline structure and total chaos. Across scores of recordings, the IDM kings have bounced between shuddering techno, digital noise, and powdery funk; the only constant is that no two tracks—indeed, no two bars—ever sound the same.
