Allan Browne Essentials

Allan Browne kick-started his half-century career by founding top-notch 1960s trad jazz ensemble The Red Onion Jazz Band. From there, the Melbourne drummer/composer played with the likes of Vince Jones, Sam Anning and Paul Grabowsky, and led several jazz bands of his own. Before his death in 2015, at age 70, Browne accumulated a bold discography built on mesmerising contrasts and puzzle-like contortions. Whether reinterpreting the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud or paying homage to New Orleans progenitors in his New Rascals ensemble, he expressed deep tranquility as vividly as he did bustling swing.
