Alex Lahey’s Hot ’n’ Juicy Playlist

Alex Lahey’s Hot ’n’ Juicy Playlist

Summer gets a serious shot in the arm with this fun-packed playlist from Melbourne indie rocker Alex Lahey, who envisions it as the soundtrack to a robust, sun-soaked feast. “My friends and I have two things in common,” she tells Apple Music. “We love summer and we love to eat. We’ve got big plans to have a backyard crab boil this summer: picture a long table covered in newspaper flanked by a bunch of hungry mates excavating juicy seafood using unusual utensils. We’ve got everything we need to make it happen, except the playlist. So here it is: named in honour of the crawfish institution Hot N Juicy, a playlist for good friends, good food and bloody good fun.”    As with Lahey’s own songs—including her exes-inspired tune “Congratulations”, which opens this mix—these selections don’t exactly follow the expected rules. That means Jackson Browne’s romantic ’80s ballad “Somebody’s Baby” somehow sits comfortably next to Missy Elliott’s contorting rap oddity “Get Ur Freak On”. So roll down the car windows and crank this one loud—and check out Lahey’s commentary on three tracks below.   Bryan Adams, “When You’re Gone” (feat. Melanie C) “This song is the ultimate forgotten hit. My friend whipped it out at karaoke a couple of months ago and it has become a go-to on all of my playlists. It’s a ripping party starter.“   Royel Otis, “Kool Aid” “I think Royel Otis are one of the most exciting emerging Australian bands. They have such a sick sense of what they’re about and have really harnessed their sound and feel. I reckon they’re going to be a big deal and are going to be the sound of this summer in backyards around the country.”   Elizabeth M Drummond, “Crisis” “I love Liz. She’s a great friend, person, songwriter, producer and artist. I’m in awe of her debut EP that’s just come out. She’s definitely invited to the crab boil.”
