There's no two ways about it: French pianist Adam Laloum is a romantic at heart. Taking up some of the most rhapsodic and sweeping works of the 19th century, Laloum offers a no-nonsense approach that keeps the spotlight on the brilliant compositions he has been performing since the late ‘90s. His Brahms Op. 117, No. 1—a lullaby—is clear and dreamy, its complex counterpoint ringing out magnificently. His interpretation of Schumann's first piano sonata harbours drama and seriousness, but also levity, as Laloum emphasises its heavenly lyricism and colourful, chorale-like passages.
