4AD Records: 1990s

Founded in 1980, 4AD was initially known for the Cocteau Twins' striking atmospheres, but that dark reputation was shed as college rock exploded and acts like the Pixies, Belly and Throwing Muses went stratospheric. 4AD then expanded its output, incorporating shoegaze pop from Lush, acoustic ballads from Red House Painters and trip-hop from Thievery Corporation.
