Two new groups rose from the ashes of the K-pop ensemble One Day: 2AM and 2PM—and they each represent different sides of K-pop, with the latter holding on to an upbeat, hip-hop-leaning sound and 2AM focusing on confessional, lovelorn ballads. Though the Korean idol group scene is known for cutting-edge and avant-garde production, the group have a decidedly old-school charm, with a sound that harks back to the golden era of boy bands in the early 2000s. Where others employ trap beats and EDM drops, they rely on pitch-perfect harmonies, melodic nuance and heartfelt lyricism.
