Forming in Melbourne in 1997, 1200 Techniques were key in helping Australian hip-hop emerge from the underground fringe. Taking cues from old-school rappers and characters in the Melbourne street graffiti scene, they were dedicated to turntablism, beatmaking and an eclectic blend of rock, pop, dance and funk influences. DJ Peril, vocalist Nfamas and guitarist Kemstar came together to release the first single "Hard as Hell”, which earned radio play throughout 1998. But it took until 2001 to get their first EP out and win over a broader swath of mainstream listeners. 2002's Choose One was an instantly loveable collection of radio-friendly hooks that sent a single into the Top 40. Consistency Theory, released in 2004, also delivered a number of singles to the charts and earned them headlining slots at major festivals. After 2004, the band members pursued solo careers and other interests, leaving behind a pioneering legacy as Oz hip-hop innovators.
