About Eiffel 65

The Italian Eurodance group Eiffel 65 moved the world—and cemented a place in music history—with their 1998 smash “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”. • The trio picked the name Eiffel from a spreadsheet of possible monikers before “Blue” came out. The addition of “65” was a mistake—their producer wrote down a phone number that ended with those digits, and it accidentally made its way to the graphic artist. • “Blue” topped the charts in numerous European countries, including the UK. In the US, it reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording in 2001. • Fans of England’s Chelsea Football Club famously chant “Blue” during matches, as their team is known as “the Blues”. • Although Eiffel 65 were one-hit wonders in the US, the group scored another massive European hit with “Move Your Body”, which appears alongside “Blue” on the group’s 1999 debut album, Europop. • Gabry Ponte, the group’s DJ, left in 2005, following the release of two additional studio albums that failed to match the success of their debut. The two remaining members, Jeffrey Jey and Maurizio Lobina, rechristened themselves Bloom 06 and released a pair of albums in the latter half of the ’00s.
