About Andy Middleton

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. I grew up attending a church with the largest pipe organ on the east coast of the US and the organists were my parents' best friends. I was sitting on the organ bench of this wonderful instrument with Ken Landis, watching and listening in amazement. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? John Coltrane Quartet, Crescent Ralph Towner, At First Light Wayne Shorter, Native Dancer All of these recordings have had a really deep emotional impact on me, and are also masterpieces of composition and improvisation. The styles represented by these albums reflect much of my musical direction and history. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Between Worlds” Between Worlds was composed without a lot of thinking; it just came out, and there is a lot of my personal history in it. The chorale-like melody, the deep modal colors of the harmony and the intensely active drums of Alan Jones propel and inspire me What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Sitting on the piano bench beside Lionel Hampton in Bordeaux, France in 1988 as he showed me the melody and chords to the song "Easy Living". It was a very private moment that I never got to experience with any other figure from the history of jazz Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? I have a lot of large ensemble music for big band and octet that I'd love to record and perform with the right musicians. I want to write for orchestra and jazz ensemble together. I'd like to transfer my love of Beethoven to the saxophone, somehow!
