Young, Dumb & Wild

Young, Dumb & Wild

Don’t let the title fool you: Andy Golledge’s second album is no blow-by-blow of youthful indiscretion. Instead, it’s a sensitive catalogue of life on and off the road, with the title track referring to how tapping into his inner child helps Golledge to keep performance anxiety at bay. Other tunes see him relish the freedom of temporary escape, hitchhiking into the unknown on “Thumbin’” and taking his well-oiled band—which also features Caitlin Harnett, a bandleader in her own right—out on tour on the punchy “Country Band”. Having grown up in Australia’s country music capital of Tamworth, Golledge certainly knows his way around that style. Yet, there’s just as much 1970s-style power pop in what he does, along with parallels to such classic singer-songwriters as Jackson Browne. His voice is especially clear and versatile on “Chained to the Night”, while he’s so chipper and high-hearted on the singing-cowboy flashback “White Rabbit” that you expect him to break into a whistle at any moment. Other songs dig into rootsy rock, as when the self-care anthem “Lovin’ Myself” enlists Melbourne alt-country band Sweet Talk. Through it all, Golledge conveys a lasting sense of intimacy—as if he couldn’t be happier to share his personal journey with us.
