EDITORS’ NOTES

After years of keeping her political views private, Taylor Swift is standing up and speaking out. “You Need to Calm Down”, the second single from her forthcoming seventh album, follows a series of public appearances and social media posts in which the superstar—clad in Pride-ready rainbow and fringe—implores her senators to support the Equality Act and protect LGBTQ+ rights. “For American citizens to be denied jobs or housing based on who they love or how they identify, in my opinion, is un-American and cruel,” she wrote. The song takes that same protest message and douses it in synths, glitter and sass—a parade-worthy treatment. She speaks directly to the haters and trolls: “Control your urges to scream about all the people you hate,” she coos. “‘Cause shade never made anybody less gay!” Hear “You Need to Calm Down” now and add Lover to your library—when the album comes out August 23, you'll get the whole thing instantly.
