Despite the title, Safe finds UK grime artist Visionist venturing far beyond his comfort zone. In place of club music's conventional cadences, there are shuddering stop-start rhythms and beats that shatter like glass; instead of hooks, just an eerie fog of processed voices and icy pads. The synthetic a cappella "Sin-Cere" falls like freezing rain; the heavier "1 Guarda" suggests a fusion of Burial and trap music being run through a high-tech trash compactor. But melancholy highlights like "Victim" and "Safe" are proof that experimental music needn't sacrifice deep emotion.
