Looking For Space

Looking For Space

After two albums of home recording, Dunedin quartet Mild Orange finally dove into a proper studio for their aptly titled third LP. The results are spacious indeed, wrapping the band’s leisurely dream pop in a warm shroud of reverb while giving each individual element plenty of room to shine. But this record wasn’t without its challenges: Frontman/producer Josh Mehrtens battled pneumonia and pleurisy midway through, informing his lyrical themes in the process. “You gotta carry on, my dear/Don’t be afraid of things not working out,” he sings on “F.E.A.R.”, a song about breaking out of your own comfort zone. Mehrtens exudes similar reassurance on the distortion-crowned “This Kinda Day”, the first song he wrote during his recovery. Elsewhere, the band settle into satisfying extended jams and even evoke Bankrupt!-era Phoenix on “The Time of Our Lives”, flirting with 1980s motifs and name-dropping geographic highlights of their time in Japan while confirming their unfussed charisma.
