After three decades of glitter-ball magnificence and canny self-reinvention, Kylie Minogue’s dance-pop preeminence was indisputable by the time she released her 12th album in 2014. Yet Kiss Me Once reinforces just how painstaking the singer’s always been about the “pop” half of the phrase, with Minogue placing as much emphasis on melody and craft as the requisite dance-floor-ready beats and panache. An array of A-list collaborators aided her mission on Kiss Me Once, including Pharrell Williams (the frisky “I Was Gonna Cancel”), Danish producer Cutfather (the supercharged “Million Miles”) and British maverick MNEK (who produced the appropriately titled “Feels So Good”). Further quality assurance is provided by Sia, one of the album’s executive producers and the co-writer of “Sexercize”, a bubblegum-dubstep hybrid that demonstrates Minogue’s ability to stay two moves ahead of her peers while making it all seem effortless.
