Impossible Princess

Impossible Princess

Shaking off the “singing budgie” moniker once and for all, Kylie Minogue seized control of her own musical destiny with 1997’s Impossible Princess. For the first time, she wrote or co-wrote every track on the album, and took a stronger hand in production. This meant a more varied sound than fans were used to hearing, shifting styles from track to track with more spontaneity and rawness. That included increasing electronic and even techno influences, but it also captured a more in-depth, personal look at the superstar’s life and feelings. Songs like “Breathe” explore her battle to maintain emotional control, while “Did It Again” laughs at her neuroses, coming with a cheeky video that has her roleplaying as four squabbling versions of herself: Sex Kylie, Dance Kylie, Cute Kylie and—courtesy of this album—Indie Kylie.
