For their self-titled third album, West Coast sextet Hey Marseilles master the art of bittersweet nostalgia. It’s there in the stuttering “My Heart”, a paean to cupid’s arrow that’s equal parts ’80s New Wave and early-’00s electro-pop. It’s there in the airy, synth-driven cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” and in the earnest, propulsive march of “Perfect OK”. The key is the production, which harnesses the rangy chamber pop of Hey Marseilles’ earlier work into an emotional current that sends a jolt straight to your heart.
