Maoli doesn’t just drop albums. Instead, the Hawaiian singer-songwriter releases what he calls “Maoli Music Overloads,” for an MMO series that now spans three iterations. This third installment, produced by J-Vibe (Morgan Heritage, Collie Buddz), builds upon Maoli’s genuinely unique blend of country, reggae, roots and traditional island music, bridging the gap between Nashville and the Pacific. Opening track “Almost Was” is a rich account of love gone wrong, with strands of pedal steel intermingling seamlessly with island percussion and a bright horn section. Maoli’s voice is smooth and soulful, whether he’s wooing a would-be lover on “Borrow Tomorrow” or confronting his demons on the reggae-tinged redemption song “God on a Gravel Road”. The two featured artists on MMO3 encapsulate the two seemingly disparate sides of Maoli’s delightfully hard-to-classify sensibilities: Jamaican reggae star Kabaka Pyramid ups the island vibes on “Clarity”, while country singer-songwriter Maddie Font (Maddie & Tae) joins on “Runnin’ Me Off”, a sweet duet in the vein of “Islands in the Stream.”
