First Day

Laura Metcalf has curated a cello album that truly stands apart from the rest, taking up works by composers from as far reaching places as Argentina, Romania and Czechoslovakia, as well as some of her own compositions. Phantasie evokes the tranquil, repetitive structures of her minimalist predecessors Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt, layering them with amorous, dreamy melodies. Her interpretation of Alberto Ginastera’s Pampeana No. 2, Op. 21 has integrity and poise, her intonation in the unaccompanied moments sounding as clear and precise as it must have in Ginstera’s own imagination.
