DJ-Kicks: Annie (DJ Mix)

After winning fans with her 2004 debut album, Anniemal, Norwegian electro-pop upstart Annie wasted no time in following up with a 2005 DJ-Kicks mix that showcased her club smarts along with her pop instincts. An anything-goes spirit animated indie-leaning dance floors in those years, and Annie’s set offers a wide-angled snapshot of the era in all its giddy chaos. Classic funk-punk jams from Liquid Liquid and ESG find their contemporary counterparts in Zongamin’s “Bongo Song” and Mu’s bonkers “Paris Hilton”. Le Tigre’s “Nanny Nanny Boo Boo (Junior Senior Remix)” traces the surprisingly short distance from riot grrrl to disco; Alan Braxe & Fred Falke’s remix of Death From Above 1979’s “Black History Month” collapses dance-punk into the French touch. What’s truly mind-blowing is how many contrasting moods can co-exist on the same crowded club floor. Motiivi:Tuntematon’s slow-motion “1939” is apocalyptic techno at its most menacing, but just two tracks later, she follows up with Bumblebee Unlimited’s Patrick Adams-produced “Lady Bug”, a winsome slice of feel-good disco slathered in chipmunk vocals. By the time Annie segues from the airy mystery of her own “Gimme Your Money” into Bow Wow Wow’s karaoke-friendly “I Want Candy”, it’s clear that she could make even the most hairpin turns feel like smooth sailing.
