After an almost three-year hiatus, South African lyricist Mass The Difference returns in 2023 with a focused body of work that looks at his upbringing and rise in the game. On “Gamble”, he details taking risks in the pursuit of his music dream. On “Jokers”, he spits battle-ready raps to his competitors. “They really wanna call it rapping, they never really saying jack, look at these jokers,” he declares in the hook. This casino imagery is carried throughout the project, in which he deals in clever double meanings, while a conversation between podcasters Joe Rogan and Joey Diaz about gambling addiction adds yet another layer to the theme of the EP. “You can tell that I grew up in a casino for real/Really used to shuffle all the cards, I was shooting for the stars,” he raps on “Carousel”, which is named after a casino in Hammanskraal. The lyricist switches effortlessly between English and Tshivenda as he tells his story with his trademark sincerity and laid-back tone, which carries the soulful love song “Ditaba” where he promises to be a better partner to his queen. On “Russian Roulette”, Mass recruits fellow rappers Ezrah and Wu Kid to bust slick rhymes over a bouncy string-led trap beat.
