Broken Brights

Broken Brights

Folk-pop star Angus Stone’s 2012 solo album is a sprawling affair that shows his musically adventurous side while also providing a strong through line in his distinctive drawl. As half of the sibling duo Angus & Julia Stone, the Sydney-born singer/songwriter became one of Australia's leading indie-folk artists during the mid-2000s. Stone began revealing his artistic restlessness in 2009, releasing a pensive album under the name Lady of the Sunshine. Three years later, he released Broken Brights, which is the only full-length solely credited to him under his birth name. Here, he synthesises his musical influences into a stretched-out journey that touches on blues, folk, rock and even proto-punk. The album is simultaneously intimate and expansive, accomplished in part by Stone's hushed singing style and in part by the stylistic breadth across the tracklist. The thudding "It Was Blue", which hinges on a riff that recalls The Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog", is an unlikely companion to the gently pulsing "Wooden Chair" or the swirling psychedelia of "End of the World", but Stone's attention to detail and clear affection for rock music's many pasts make it all work. Those traits also set the stage for his later musical endeavours, including the psych-tinged solo project DOPE LEMON.
