Apple Music Home Session: Bastille

On their Apple Music Home Session, Bastille embrace two iconic cultural landmarks. First there’s “Thelma + Louise”, the London four-piece’s 2021 single named after the unforgettable 1991 film, here given a stripped-down—though no less euphoric—version. “‘Thelma + Louise’ is about escapism through fiction and imagination to somewhere very different, and that was definitely something we’ve all had to do a lot through lockdowns,” Dan Smith tells Apple Music. “We wanted to reflect the amazing themes of the film and make the song feel like a narrative road movie of a song.” Then there’s the song that inspired that track: Bruce Springsteen’s floor-filling 1984 anthem “Dancing in the Dark”. “We were thinking of Springsteen and trying to channel some of his storytelling, so ‘Dancing in the Dark’ felt like a fun companion song for the session. I absolutely love that song and I had such a good time stripping it back to just me on the Wurlitzer singing it out.” Press play on an uplifting, escapist session here.
