The Baton Rouge baron YoungBoy Never Broke Again is widely considered one of the most prolific voices in rap. That point is illustrated on the new compilation album from his Never Broke Again empire. Even when he’s taking a break, YoungBoy is still dropping albums, they just don’t have his name on every track. Generosity abounds on Compliments of Grave Digger Mountain, which finds YoungBoy largely ceding the spotlight to up-and-comers and regional favourites from his collective. Opener “4shit” features BBG Baby Joe crooning over bluesy piano chords and trap drums, while “Bloody” is highlighted by Lil Dump’s ferocious, gravelly delivery. When YoungBoy does show up, he shows why he’s the leader of this upstart crew. His raps are unvarnished on “Hurt”, when he sings: “It hurt for to hurt somebody/It hurt to know that I don’t know no one got me.” He concludes during the chorus: “I’m exhauuuuusted.”
