Tchaikovsky

Moscow-born but raised and trained in Cologne, Olga Scheps gives us Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto no. 1, a warhorse with a great deal of subtlety and charm. The context of solo Tchaikovsky with a wintry/Christmassy flavour draws out the delicacy of much of the concerto’s filigree piano writing. Scheps, a wonderfully stylish Chopin pianist, really emphasises the singing line and the work’s moments of poetry; the central Andantino semplice is a delight. A seven-movement suite from The Nutcracker is exquisitely done, and a couple of Tchaikovsky’s Seasons (“November” and “December”) play to Scheps’ obvious strengths.
