As boisterous as they are, The Rumjacks’ forceful blasts of Celtic punk are all too textured, both musically and lyrically. Observe 2011’s “An Irish Pub Song”, a pointed takedown of faux Irish bars that opens with a dainty penny-whistle melody. You might also hear accordion, banjo and bouzouki at play within the Sydney-formed five-piece, while mandolin cuts brightly through 2016’s beer-splashed wake “A Fistful O’ Roses”. Boston-based vocalist Mike Rivkees—who has filled in at the front of Dropkick Murphys—took over for long-time singer Frankie McLaughlin on 2021’s Hestia, lending renewed oomph to the now multi-continental band. Their stylistic cues have continued to diversify as well, with jaunty ska guitar licks guiding 2022’s “Bloodsoaked in Chorus”.
