The Meters Essentials

The Meters Essentials

A cornerstone band in New Orleans music, The Meters made high art of syncopation. Their brand of funk was slinky and spare, with Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste's time-defying drums as the hook. Formed by keyboardist Art Neville, The Meters cut a string of instrumental records between '60s studio sessions with virtually every New Orleans R&B artist as producer Allen Toussaint's house band. In the early '70s they added Art's brother Cyril Neville and switched to a harder sound with vocals. To emphasize their mastery of the style, they switched their name to The Funky Meters in the early ‘90s. Standouts such as “Cissy Strut” and “Hey Pocky A-Way” remain New Orleans standards.
