Roland Kirk (he added Rahsaan to his name in '69) was not only a virtuoso musician—he was also known for playing several reed instruments at the same time, both on stage and in the studio. Far more than just a crowd-pleasing showman, Kirk created otherworldly harmonies through his mastery of circular breathing. Along with a witty sense of humour, the Ohio native had a passionate sense of social justice that made him a leading figure in '60s soul jazz. Incorporating pop, R&B and classical elements into his bop-centred style, he gained an audience amongst adventurous rock fans.
