Joe Pass Essentials

Joe Pass Essentials

This swinging jazz-guitar smoothie played professionally while still a teen in the '40s and came into his own while recording in residence at a drug rehab in the early ‘60s. "Bernie's Tune", recorded with Les McCann the following year, anticipates the deft touch and harmonic explorations underlying the perfection of tracks like "How High the Moon" from 1973's Virtuoso, his first solo album. Pass soon proved himself the perfect duet partner for Ella Fitzgerald, burnishing her late-career mahogany voice with deft walking bass lines and counterpoint in unrehearsed gems like "In My Solitude".
