Jawbreaker Essentials

Jawbreaker were well ahead of the pop-punk and emo trends, and they were arguably smarter and more unique than much of what followed. Influenced by The Smiths and The Replacements, they weren't afraid to write literate lyrics, but their songs weren't any less catchy. Formed in New Jersey, they moved to San Francisco and made their first record, 1990's Unfun. After a few indie releases, they moved to the majors for '95's Dear You, whose influence would spread in years to come. But they disbanded soon after, with frontman Blake Schwarzenbach going on to form Jets to Brazil.
