They hail from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and for a decade—from the early ‘90s to the early ‘00s—Grupo Revelação toiled primarily for the mega-city they call home, playing pagode for the people. But in 2002, the sextet changed labels, and suddenly that revelation went nationwide and then global. This is taut, professional samba played authoritatively by a band that knows how to give each musician room to shine. But there's also a glorious collective vibe here: you can nearly see the blocos floating by when the singers join their voices together.
