Dr Zeus Essentials

Coming to prominence during the height of the Asian underground boom of British Asian music in the early 2000s, Baljit Singh Padam, aka Dr Zeus, combined the raucous party-starting sounds of North Indian bhangra with UK bass culture and hip-hop to produce an incisive new mix. His 2003 single “Kangna” launched his sound through a blend of bhangra melodies with the husky-voiced verses of rapper Shortie, while ensuing track “Don’t Be Shy” delved into silken R’n’B harmonies with the vocals of girl group Rouge. A genre-traversing collaborator, Padam has since gone on to work with rap royalty Snoop Dogg on 2018’s “Woofer” and has remixed the music of legendary Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, all proving the long-lasting nuances of his rap-referencing sound.
