Courteeners Essentials

The Courteeners fully embrace their Mancunian roots, combining The Smiths' sweet guitar pop with a dash of Joy Division's moody post-punk, and frontman Liam Fray's rock star bravado is just like that of the Gallagher brothers. After forming in 2006, the band quickly grew a following in the UK with jittery, jangly singles like "Not Nineteen Forever" and the downward spiral tale "You Overdid It Doll", which throbs like a gloomier Franz Ferdinand. It's all highlighted by Fray's confessional lyrics, as on "The Rest of the World Has Gone Home," which echo Morrissey's poetic flair.
