Since 2003, this Portland ensemble have been on a mission to elevate rustic indie rock into the realm of the fantastical. The title track to 2008's Furr may come adorned with campfire-stoking harmonicas and hay-breaking foot stomps, but frontman Eric Earley's magic-realist lyrics embellish the natural setting with fairy-tale flourishes. On 2013's VII, their ragged roots get tangled up in more robust rhythms, with country-funk struts like “Thirsty Man” and “Shine On” delivering equal doses of grit and groove. And with 2015's “All Across This Land”, they initiate a glorious amalgam of Southern boogie and gleaming glam guitars.
