About The Timelords

Conceived by the mischievous Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty, this fictitious group registered a surprise UK number 1 with the novelty ‘Doctorin’ The Tardis’ in the summer of 1988. Inspired by the television series Dr Who, the insistent tune incorporated the glam rock thud of Gary Glitter, who even joined the duo when they performed the song. The spoof was continued in The Manual, a book credited to the Timelords, in which Drummond espoused his theories of how to create a number 1 hit. The front cover of the tome enthused ‘The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu Reveal Their Zenarchistic Method Used In Making The Unthinkable Happen’. The Drummond/Cauty partnership soon enjoyed even greater success with the dance-orientated pranksters KLF, whose title also served as the Timelords’ record label.
