With their first two singles “Shaya” (2019) and “iParty” (2020), the pioneering duo Mshayi & Mr Thela directed the interest of South African music fans towards Cape Town’s occasionally overlooked gqom scene thanks to their unique, gospel-heavy take on the genre. Madoda Mbeki a.k.a. Mshayi and Siphiwe Sihawu a.k.a. Mr Thela, both from the Cape Town township Khayelitsha, capitalised on the momentum of those two singles by releasing the EP Make Cape Town Great Again in 2020. Between their label, Shaya Records, and the Mshayi-co-owned venue Rands Cape Town, the duo play a crucial role in their city’s party scene.
